Doolans Bend | Free Camping on the Murray River, Wahgunyah VIC

Nestled on a sweeping bend of the Murray River, Doolans Bend is a fantastic free camping destination for those exploring the rich food and wine country around Wahgunyah and Rutherglen. This large, open area offers numerous campsites spread out along the riverbank, providing a classic Australian bush camping experience. The sites are shaded by mature River Red Gums, offering respite from the summer sun. Access is via a dirt track, which is typically suitable for 2WD vehicles and caravans in dry weather, though care should be taken after rain when the track can become slippery.

Doolans Bend is a primitive campground, meaning it is strictly for self-sufficient campers. There are no toilets, no rubbish bins, and no drinking water available, so visitors must bring all their own supplies, including a portable toilet. The principle of ‘leave no trace’ is essential to keeping this beautiful spot pristine for everyone to enjoy. The main attraction is the river itself, which is perfect for a range of activities. It’s a popular spot for fishing, with Murray Cod and Golden Perch being the prized catches. The calm waters are also ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. Its proximity to civilization is a major drawcard; while it feels secluded, the towns of Wahgunyah and Corowa (just across the river in NSW) are only minutes away for supplies, a pub meal, or a coffee. The world-renowned Rutherglen wine region is on your doorstep, making Doolans Bend an ideal base for a weekend of cellar door hopping followed by a relaxing evening by the campfire.
