Potable Water Locations Western Australia Free Refill Stations & Caravan Water Points
Location Information
Here is the comprehensive directory for Western Australia.
Crucial WA Water Rules:
-
The "Standpipe" System: Unlike Victoria/NSW, most high-flow "standpipes" in WA (large pipes filling from overhead) are LOCKED and require a specialized swipe card/account with the Water Corporation (mostly for farmers/water carters). Do not rely on them. Use the low-flow consumer taps listed below.
-
Water Scarcity (North & East): North of Geraldton and East of Norseman, water is precious.
-
Roadhouses: Most roadhouses on the Nullarbor and Great Northern Hwy run on expensive desalination or trucked water. They usually Charge for water ($1 for 20L is common) or refuse connection.
-
Karratha/Roebourne: Water is often Paid via a coin/card dispenser at Visitor Centres.
-
-
The "Long Hose" Rule: In WA, taps are often placed far from the bollards to prevent damage. Carry at least 20m–30m of drinking water hose.

How to Verify a Tap in WA
-
The "Desal" Taste: In coastal towns (Exmouth, Denham, Coral Bay), the tap water is desalinated. It is safe but can have a slightly "flat" or metallic taste. It is expensive to produce, so locals appreciate it if you don't use it to wash your van.
-
The "Red Dirt" Filter: In the Pilbara (Tom Price, Newman, Port Hedland), the water is safe but often contains fine red iron dust that settles in your tank. Use an inline sediment filter (blue canister type) when filling to keep your tank bottom clean.
-
The Roadhouse Rule: Never assume free water at a remote roadhouse (e.g., Nullarbor, Great Northern Hwy).
-
Ask First: "Is it okay if I fill a 10L jerry can?"
-
Don't Connect: Never connect a hose to a roadhouse tap without explicit permission. They will often come out and stop you because their water is trucked in at high cost.
