Discover the dramatic beauty and convenience of the Wannon Falls Recreation Area, located just a short drive west of Hamilton in Victoria’s Western District. Famous for its spectacular 30-metre waterfall plunging over basalt cliffs into a deep pool below, this reserve offers not only stunning views but also a popular free camping area suitable for various setups. The falls are most impressive after heavy rainfall, typically during winter and spring, showcasing the raw power of the Wannon River.

The recreation area provides excellent facilities for both day visitors and campers. Multiple viewing platforms offer panoramic perspectives of the falls and the surrounding gorge. Expansive grassy areas are perfect for picnics, equipped with tables, wood-fired barbecues (bring your own wood), and accessible flush toilets. A large, adventure-style playground makes it a fantastic stop for families travelling through the region.

For those looking to stay overnight, a designated free camping area is available within the reserve. It features relatively level grassy sites suitable for tents, swags, campervans, caravans, and larger motorhomes. While sites aren’t marked, there’s ample space, especially outside peak periods. Access is via sealed roads directly off the Glenelg Highway, making it easily reachable for all types of vehicles. The convenience of potable water taps and flushing toilets within the reserve adds significant appeal for a free camp.

Visitors should note the specific rules for the reserve. Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times. Open fires are permitted in the designated fireplaces, provided there are no fire restrictions or Total Fire Ban days in effect. You must bring your own firewood, as collecting wood within the reserve is prohibited. Rubbish bins are provided, helping to keep this beautiful area clean. While camping is free, stays are generally expected to be short-term. Generators may be permitted, but respectful usage hours apply. Mobile phone coverage is generally good.

The reserve also features short walking tracks, including paths down towards the base of the falls (care required) and along the river, offering opportunities for bird watching and fishing. Its proximity to the town of Hamilton ensures easy access to supplies, pubs, restaurants, and other services. Don’t miss the nearby Nigretta Falls, another impressive waterfall just a few kilometres away.
