The camping area features dispersed, unallocated sites that are nestled into the forest and along the high riverbanks. The star attraction is the sandy beach area that appears when river levels are favorable, providing a perfect spot for swimming, fishing, or pulling up a kayak. The site looks directly across the water to the Tocumwal Foreshore Park, offering unique views of the town and the historic road and rail bridge that connects the two states. The ground is a mix of compacted earth, leaf litter, and grassy clearings, suitable for caravans, camper trailers, and tents.
As a free site managed by Parks Victoria, Wilsons Beach has no facilities. There are no toilets, showers, or tap water on-site. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own portable toilet, water, and power supplies. This lack of amenities helps to keep the site quieter and cleaner than the more developed areas nearby. Access is via unsealed forest tracks which wind through the regional park; these are generally accessible by 2WD in dry weather but can become slippery and difficult after rain.
Despite its secluded feel, Wilsons Beach is incredibly convenient. You are less than a 5-minute drive from the Newell Highway and the heart of Tocumwal, where you can enjoy a meal at a classic pub, visit the famous “Big Murray Cod,” or explore the town’s rich aviation history.
