Dow Well Rest Area – Free Camping near Little Desert National Park

  • 3361.jpg

For the truly self-sufficient traveller seeking solitude and a genuine bush experience, the Dow Well Rest Area offers a primitive yet peaceful stopover on the edge of the magnificent Little Desert National Park. This is not your typical highway rest stop; it is a remote clearing in the scrubland, accessible via unsealed tracks, that provides a basic space for camping. Its primary appeal lies in its isolation and immediate proximity to the park’s natural wonders, making it a fantastic, no-cost base for those equipped for off-grid adventures, including 4WD enthusiasts, bird watchers, and hikers. Forget amenities and convenience; Dow Well is about disconnecting and immersing yourself in the unique Mallee environment of western Victoria.

There are no marked bays, and the surface is best suited for high-clearance vehicles, off-road camper trailers, Large caravans and and motorhomes.. As the name suggests, a historic well is the only feature, but the water is not suitable for drinking. There are absolutely no facilities here – no toilets, and no potable water. Visitors must adhere to strict leave-no-trace principles, carrying out everything they bring in. Mobile phone reception is virtually non-existent. While this lack of facilities may deter many, for seasoned bush campers it is the very essence of its charm. It provides an unfiltered connection to the Australian landscape, with starry nights, the sounds of nature, and the park’s walking trails right at your doorstep. It’s a true adventurer’s stop.
