Potable Water Locations South Australia Free Refill & Caravan Taps
Location Information
Here is the comprehensive directory for South Australia.
Crucial SA Water Rules:
-
The "Coin-Op" System: In the Eyre Peninsula (Port Lincoln, Streaky Bay, Ceduna) and Yorke Peninsula, free water is almost non-existent. You will encounter SA Water Standpipes that require Credit Cards or Coins ($1 for ~20-50L).
-
Hard Water (Limestone Coast): In the South East (Mt Gambier, Naracoorte), the water comes from limestone aquifers. It is safe and tastes good, but it is very hard (high calcium) and will scale up your hot water system element quickly.
-
Outback Water (Coober Pedy/Marla): Water is extremely expensive here (desalinated or trucked). Expect to pay for every drop ($1 for 20L is standard).

How to identify an SA Paid Station
-
The Blue Box: Look for a blue, knee-height metal box with a white plastic grate on top.
-
The Interface:
-
Coin-Op: Has a slot for $1 or 20c coins. Usually dispenses ~20 Litres per $1.
-
Card-Op: Has a "Tap & Go" reader. Usually charges a flat fee for a timed flow (e.g., $5 for 10 minutes).
-
-
The Connector: These paid stations almost always have a 25mm (1 inch) thread. Standard garden hose connectors are 20mm (3/4 inch). You must carry a 25mm-to-20mm reducer adaptor (plastic or brass) to connect your hose, or you won't be able to fill up.
The "Fruit Fly" Warning
-
Yamba Quarantine Station (Renmark): If entering SA from Victoria/NSW, you cannot bring fresh fruit/veg.
-
Water Check: They generally do not check your water tanks, but they may ask if you are carrying "fruit contaminated" water (rare). Potable water is fine.
